Zakat on Gold

A guide to understanding and calculating Zakat on gold.

Is Zakat Due on Gold?

Zakat is due on gold that meets two conditions:

  1. The gold reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold of 87.48 grams.
  2. The gold has been held for at least one lunar year.

Gold Nisab

The Nisab for gold is 87.48 grams of pure gold. If your gold is below this weight, Zakat is not due on gold alone. However, the value of your gold may still be included when calculating total zakatable assets.

Purity Matters

Only pure gold content counts for Zakat. Common purity factors:

  • 24K: 100% pure
  • 22K: 91.67% pure
  • 21K: 87.5% pure
  • 18K: 75% pure

For example, 100g of 22K gold contains 91.67g of pure gold.

Zakat on Gold Jewellery

There are different scholarly opinions on gold jewellery. A common approach is that regularly worn jewellery may be exempt from Zakat, while jewellery held for investment or special occasions is zakatable. You may wish to consult a qualified scholar.
