How to Calculate Zakat on Gold

Zakat is due on gold that reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold of 87.48 grams and has been held for one lunar year. Only the pure gold content is considered — if you own 22K gold, only 91.67% of its weight counts as pure gold.

Gold Nisab

The Nisab for gold is 87.48 grams. If your gold weighs less than this, Zakat is not due on gold alone, but it may still be due when combined with other assets such as cash savings and investments.

Example Calculation

If you own 100 grams of 22K gold at a price of £63 per gram:

  • Pure gold = 100g × 0.9167 = 91.67g
  • Gold value = 91.67g × £63 = £5,775
  • This exceeds the gold Nisab of 87.48g, so Zakat is due
  • Zakat = £5,775 × 2.5% = £144.38

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Zakat calculated on gold?
Zakat on gold is calculated by determining the total value of your gold (weight × current gold price × purity factor), then applying 2.5% if the gold weight reaches the Nisab threshold of 87.48 grams.
What is the Nisab for gold?
The gold Nisab is 87.48 grams of pure gold (24K). If you own gold below this weight, Zakat is not due on gold alone, but it may still be due when combined with other assets.
Does gold purity affect Zakat?
Yes. Only the pure gold content is considered for Zakat. For example, if you have 100 grams of 22K gold, the pure gold content is approximately 91.67 grams (100 × 0.9167).
What is the difference between gold Nisab and silver Nisab?
The gold Nisab (87.48g) typically results in a higher threshold. The silver Nisab (612.36g) results in a lower threshold, which means more people qualify to pay Zakat. Some scholars recommend using silver Nisab as it may benefit more recipients.
What is Zakat?
Zakat is an obligatory act of worship in Islam and one of the Five Pillars. It requires eligible Muslims to give 2.5% of their qualifying wealth annually to those in need. Zakat is both a spiritual duty and a means of supporting the less fortunate.
What is the Zakat percentage?
Zakat is generally calculated at 2.5% of qualifying net assets that have been held for one lunar year, provided those assets exceed the Nisab threshold. This percentage is based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold for one lunar year before Zakat becomes due. The Nisab threshold is based on either 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab, as it is lower and may benefit more recipients.
