Zakat in the United Kingdom
Over 3.9 million Muslims live in the United Kingdom, making up approximately 6.5% of the population. For UK-based Muslims, calculating Zakat accurately means accounting for both traditional forms of wealth — gold, silver, and cash — and UK-specific financial products such as ISAs, premium bonds, Help to Buy schemes, and workplace pensions.
Our Zakat Calculator defaults to GBP and allows you to enter all major asset categories in one place. Gold and silver prices can be adjusted to reflect current UK bullion market rates. All calculations run locally in your browser — no financial data is collected or stored.
Many UK Muslims calculate and pay Zakat during Ramadan, though the obligation is tied to your personal lunar anniversary — the date your wealth first exceeded Nisab. The flexibility to choose your date means you can align Zakat with Ramadan for spiritual benefit while ensuring timely fulfilment of the obligation.
What Assets Are Subject to Zakat?
When calculating Zakat in the UK, include the following assets at their current market value in GBP:
- Cash ISAs and Stocks & Shares ISAs — The tax-free wrapper does not exempt ISA funds from Zakat. Include the full balance of all ISA accounts.
- Current and savings accounts — All balances across UK bank accounts, including digital banks such as Monzo, Starling, and Revolut.
- Premium Bonds — NS&I Premium Bonds capital is zakatable. Prize winnings become zakatable once received and held for one lunar year.
- Help to Buy ISA and Lifetime ISA — Government bonus does not affect zakatability. The full balance, including the government contribution, is considered your savings.
- Workplace pensions — Defined-benefit pensions are generally not zakatable until received. Defined-contribution and SIPP pensions that you can access may be zakatable annually on the accessible value.
- Gold and silver — Jewellery, coins, and bullion. Only pure metal content counts. Use our Gold Zakat Calculator to factor in purity and weight.
- Property investments — Buy-to-let properties are generally not zakatable as assets themselves, but rental income saved for one lunar year becomes zakatable. Properties held for trading are treated as business inventory.
- Cryptocurrency — Include at current GBP market value. Many scholars now recognise crypto as a zakatable digital asset.
- Investments and stocks — Shares held for trading are zakatable at market value. For long-term holdings, paying 2.5% on the portfolio value is a common and practical approach for individual investors.
How to Calculate Zakat in GBP
Follow these steps to calculate your Zakat in British Pounds:
- Set your currency to GBP — The calculator above defaults to GBP. All gold and silver prices should be entered as GBP per gram.
- Enter each asset category — Go through each input field: cash and savings, gold, silver, business assets, investments, crypto, and money owed to you. Enter the current GBP value of each.
- Enter your deductible debts — Add up immediate debts such as credit card balances, personal loan payments due, utility bills, and rent arrears. Enter the total in GBP.
- Check gold and silver prices — The calculator pre-fills estimated gold and silver prices. Update these to match current UK market rates for greater accuracy. Check a reliable source such as the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) for the latest prices.
- Select your Nisab type — Choose gold Nisab (higher threshold, fewer people qualify) or silver Nisab (lower threshold, more Zakat reaches those in need). Use our Nisab Calculator to compare both thresholds in GBP.
- Click Calculate — The result shows whether Zakat is due, your net zakatable assets, the Nisab threshold, and the exact Zakat amount in GBP. Use Copy or Print to save your result.
Gold and Silver Nisab
The Nisab threshold in GBP depends on current gold and silver prices. Using approximate mid-2026 UK prices:
| Nisab Type | Weight | Price per Gram | Nisab in GBP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Nisab | 87.48g | ~£63/g | ~£5,511 |
| Silver Nisab | 612.36g | ~£0.65/g | ~£398 |
Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab because the lower threshold enables more Zakat to reach those in need. Our calculator lets you choose either threshold with a single click.
Deductible Debts for UK Residents
You may deduct immediate debts from your total zakatable assets. For UK residents, this typically includes:
- Credit card balances and store card debt
- Personal loan instalments due within the current month
- Outstanding utility bills, council tax arrears, and rent due
- Overdrafts and short-term borrowing
- Tax owed to HMRC that is due imminently
A common view on mortgages is that only the upcoming monthly payment is deductible, not the entire outstanding mortgage balance. For student loans repaid through PAYE (Plan 1, Plan 2, or Plan 5), scholarly opinions differ. You may wish to consult a qualified scholar for guidance on your specific circumstances.
These Nisab figures are illustrative, based on approximate mid-2026 prices. Always check current market rates when calculating your Zakat.
