What is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and an obligatory act of worship. It requires eligible Muslims to donate 2.5% of their qualifying wealth annually to those in need. Zakat is both a spiritual purification and a practical means of supporting the less fortunate in society.

How is Zakat Calculated?

Zakat is calculated by following these steps:

  1. Add up all your zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, investments, business assets, etc.)
  2. Subtract any immediate debts and liabilities
  3. Compare the net amount to the Nisab threshold
  4. If net assets equal or exceed Nisab, multiply by 2.5% to get your Zakat amount
  5. If net assets are below Nisab, Zakat is not due

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold for one lunar year before Zakat becomes due. The Nisab threshold is traditionally based on either:

  • Gold Nisab: 87.48 grams of gold
  • Silver Nisab: 612.36 grams of silver

Many scholars recommend using the silver Nisab because it is typically lower, meaning more people qualify to pay Zakat and more recipients may benefit.

Zakat Calculation Formula

Net Zakatable Assets = Total Zakatable Assets − Deductible Debts

If Net Zakatable Assets ≥ Nisab:

Zakat = Net Zakatable Assets × 2.5%

Example Zakat Calculation

Cash savings: £5,000+ £5,000
Gold value: £2,000+ £2,000
Investments: £3,000+ £3,000
Deductible debts: £1,000− £1,000

Net zakatable assets= £9,000
Nisab (gold, at £63/g)= £5,511
Zakat at 2.5%= £225.00
