What is Zakat Percentage?

Understanding the Zakat rate and how it is applied to your wealth.

The Standard Zakat Rate: 2.5%

The standard Zakat rate is 2.5% of qualifying net assets. This percentage is derived from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and is the rate most commonly used by scholars across the major schools of Islamic thought.

Why 2.5%?

The 2.5% rate comes from the hadith in which the Prophet said: “On silver, one quarter of one tenth is due” (Sahih al-Bukhari). One quarter of one tenth equals 2.5%. This rate applies to gold, silver, cash, and trade goods.

What Assets Does 2.5% Apply To?

The 2.5% rate applies to:

  • Gold and silver (including jewellery)
  • Cash and bank savings
  • Business assets and inventory
  • Investments and stocks held for trading
  • Cryptocurrency

Are There Different Rates for Different Assets?

While 2.5% is the standard rate for most zakatable assets, some assets have different rates. For example, agricultural produce may be subject to 5% or 10% depending on irrigation. However, for most personal wealth — cash, gold, silver, and investments — the rate is 2.5%.

How Does the 2.5% Compare?

Zakat at 2.5% is intended as a modest contribution. It is designed to be affordable while providing meaningful support to those in need. The rate is applied only to wealth that exceeds the Nisab threshold and has been held for a full lunar year.
